The 5 Ways a Chess Game Can Draw
About 60% of all master-level games end in a draw — but only a small fraction of those are stalemates or draws by agreement. The rule-based draws (threefold repetition, the 50-move rule, and insufficient material) decide the vast majority of online endgames where neither side wants to accept a half-point until the position truly cannot be won. Here is the complete list:
Stalemate
The side to move has zero legal moves AND is not in check. Game ends instantly with ½–½. Stalemate is the only automatic draw that does not need to be claimed — it ends the game the moment it appears on the board.
Threefold repetition
The exact same position (same pieces on the same squares, same side to move, same castling rights, same en passant target) appears for the third time. Either player can claim a draw. With fivefold repetition the draw is automatic — no claim needed.
The 50-move rule
50 consecutive moves by each side (100 ply total) pass with zero pawn moves and zero captures. Either player can claim a draw. With 75 such moves the draw is automatic.
Insufficient material
Neither side has enough material left to deliver checkmate by any legal sequence of moves. The game ends immediately as a 'dead position' draw — no claim needed.
Draw by agreement
Both players verbally (or with a written offer in an OTB game) agree to split the point. Either side can offer; the other side can accept or decline. Not relevant to engines or online auto-play — but the single most common draw in master practice.

Threefold Repetition
The most common rule-based draw in club and online chess. When the exact same position appears three times during the game, either player can claim a draw. Four things you need to know:
It is the POSITION that must repeat — not the move sequence
What matters is the arrangement of pieces, whose turn it is, the castling rights, and the en passant target square. The same position can arise via three completely different move orders and still trigger the rule. Equally, repeating a sequence of moves does NOT trigger the rule if the position has not appeared three times — losing castling rights or an en passant possibility makes the new position legally different even when the board looks identical.
The three occurrences do not have to be consecutive
If a position appears on move 12, again on move 18, and again on move 24, that is threefold repetition. Most beginners assume the repetitions must come back-to-back (move-by-move ping-pong), but the rule counts ANY three occurrences during the entire game. This is why long maneuvering games sometimes draw 'by surprise' — the third repetition arrives unnoticed.
Threefold repetition must be CLAIMED — fivefold is automatic
At threefold, the player whose turn it is must claim the draw before making their move (or claim it after their opponent's move and before their own clock starts running, per FIDE 9.2). If neither side claims, the game continues. At fivefold repetition (FIDE 9.6) the arbiter ends the game automatically — no claim needed. Online platforms typically auto-claim at threefold the instant the position triggers.
Perpetual check is just repetition in disguise
'Perpetual check' is not a separate draw rule in modern FIDE chess — it was removed centuries ago. What is actually happening: a side delivers check, the king moves, the same checking move repeats. After three repetitions of the resulting position, threefold repetition triggers. The side under attack claims the draw. Most engines and platforms detect perpetuals as threefold repetition.

The 50-Move Rule
The 50-move counter starts at 0 and increments after every ply. The instant either side moves a pawn or captures a piece, the counter resets. When the counter reaches 50 moves per side (100 ply total) with no pawn move and no capture, either side can claim a draw. Four key facts:

The 50-move counter starts at 0 and increments after every ply (half-move) by both sides. If either side moves a pawn OR captures any piece, the counter resets to 0 immediately. So '50 moves without progress' really means 50 moves with only piece-only, non-capture play. Pawn-up endgames almost never trigger the 50-move rule because pawns must advance to promote.
It is 50 MOVES, not 50 ply — 100 half-moves total
FIDE counts a 'move' as both sides playing once (one White move plus one Black move = one move). So the 50-move rule requires 50 White moves AND 50 Black moves without progress — 100 half-moves total. Like threefold, the 50-move rule must be CLAIMED — 75 is automatic
At 50 moves the player whose turn it is can claim the draw. FIDE 9.3 lets you write the move on your scoresheet and claim before playing it — if the claim is correct the game ends, if incorrect you lose 2 minutes and play your move. At 75 moves (FIDE 9.6.2) the arbiter ends the game automatically. Engines and online platforms enforce 75-move automatically.
K+R+B vs K+R, K+N+N vs K+pawn, and other 50-move tablebase wins exist
Specific seven-piece endgames are theoretical wins for one side but require MORE than 50 moves of perfect play to convert. Endgame tablebases prove forced mates of 100, 200, even 500+ moves — the longest known is over 540 moves. FIDE briefly experimented with 75- and 100-move exceptions for these endings, but reverted to the universal 50-move rule in 2014 because the exceptions were unworkable in tournament play. So engines can prove the win, but the human cannot legally claim it.

Insufficient Material — The 'Dead Position' Rule
When neither side has enough pieces to deliver checkmate by any legal sequence of moves, the game ends instantly as a draw — no claim needed (FIDE 5.2.2). The standard cases:

Five Common Misconceptions
The recurring draw-rule errors that show up at club level and below:
Thinking threefold repetition needs the moves to repeat consecutively
The repetitions can come at any point in the game. If the position arises on move 12, again on move 24, and again on move 41, that is threefold repetition — even though 12 different moves separated each occurrence.
Thinking the 50-move counter is in plies
It is in moves — i.e. one White move plus one Black move = one move. The rule requires 100 ply (50 by each side) with no pawn move or capture. Engines often display the ply counter (0–99) to make the threshold visible.
Forgetting that loss of castling rights creates a NEW position
Two boards with identical pieces are legally different positions if one side can still castle and the other can't. So if the king or rook has moved between two seemingly identical positions, the second one does NOT count toward threefold.
Believing 'perpetual check' is a separate draw rule
It is not — it was removed from FIDE rules centuries ago. Perpetual check draws are claimed as threefold repetition (the same checking position repeats three times) or by 50-move rule.
Thinking K + 2 knights vs K is automatic insufficient material
It is not — mate is technically possible (with cooperation), so engines play it out. The draw usually comes by 50-move rule. K + B vs K and K + N vs K are the only single-minor-piece-vs-king draws that count as insufficient material automatically.

Does threefold repetition mean three moves in a row?
No. What matters is the POSITION repeating three times, not the moves. If the same arrangement of pieces (with the same side to move and the same castling and en passant rights) arises three times at any point during the game, threefold repetition is triggered — even if the three occurrences are dozens of moves apart. The most common case is shuffling pieces back and forth (so the same position recurs every 4 ply), but games can also reach threefold through long maneuvering sequences that happen to land in the same position three times.
What is the 50-move rule in chess?
If 50 consecutive moves go by with NO pawn moves and NO captures by either side, either player can claim a draw. The counter resets to zero whenever a pawn moves or a piece is captured. '50 moves' means 50 by White AND 50 by Black — a total of 100 half-moves. The rule prevents games from continuing forever in positions where no progress is being made. Like threefold, it must be claimed at 50; at 75 the arbiter ends the game automatically (FIDE 9.6.2). The current ply counter appears as the 5th field of any FEN string.
Why does the 50-move rule exist?
To stop games from going on indefinitely when neither side is making progress. Without it, an endgame like K+R vs K+B could be played for hundreds of moves with no resolution. Pawn moves and captures are the only irreversible actions in chess — once you push a pawn or capture a piece, the game cannot return to the previous position — so 50 moves without either is a hard ceiling on 'progress can still be made'. The rule was first introduced informally in the 1700s and codified in FIDE rules in 1928.
What is insufficient material in chess?
When neither side has enough pieces left to deliver checkmate by ANY legal sequence of moves, the game ends immediately as a draw — a 'dead position'. Is king and 2 knights vs king a draw?
Almost always, but it is NOT automatic insufficient material. With perfect cooperation from the defender, the two knights CAN create a mating net (one knight checks while the other covers escape squares against a king in the corner). But the side with two knights cannot FORCE this — the defender simply needs to keep the king away from the corner. In practice the game is drawn by the 50-move rule. Online platforms vary on whether they auto-draw K + 2N vs K — most do not.
Is perpetual check a draw?
Yes, but not as its own rule — 'perpetual check' is not in modern FIDE rules. What actually happens is: the same checking position repeats three times, triggering threefold repetition. The side delivering the checks claims the draw. Practical examples: a queen checking from h7, then h6, then h7 again creates the same position twice; one more cycle and threefold triggers. The 'perpetual check' label is a useful informal name, but the rule that ends the game is threefold repetition (or fivefold, automatically).
How do you claim a draw in chess?

What is the 75-move rule?
An automatic backstop on the 50-move rule, added by FIDE in 2014. If 75 moves go by with no pawn move and no capture, the arbiter ends the game as a draw without either player needing to claim. The 75-move rule exists because the 50-move claim can be missed (especially in time pressure) — 75 moves is the hard ceiling at which the game must end regardless. The same backstop exists for repetition: fivefold repetition (FIDE 9.6) ends the game automatically, even if no player claimed at threefold.
What is a dead position?
A position where checkmate is IMPOSSIBLE by ANY sequence of legal moves, regardless of how either side plays. The most common dead positions are the insufficient material cases (K vs K, K+B vs K, K+N vs K, K+B vs K+B same colour). Locked pawn endgames with no piece on either side can also be dead positions if no breakthrough is possible. Dead positions end the game IMMEDIATELY — neither side can win, no claim is needed, and the arbiter (or the engine) records the result as ½–½. This is FIDE article 5.2.2.
