FEN (Forsyth–Edwards Notation) is a one-line text format that describes a chess position completely. It records piece placement (rank by rank from 8 down to 1), whose turn it is (w or b), castling rights (KQkq), the en passant target square, the halfmove clock, and the fullmove number. The starting position FEN is rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR w KQkq - 0 1. Every Chess.com, Lichess, and chess.rodeo position can be exported as FEN.
