Why these numbers? They come from approximate mobility — the average number of squares a piece controls from a typical board position. A queen reaches more squares than a rook, which reaches more than a bishop or knight, which reach more than a pawn. The ratios match what actually happens in millions of master games.
Kaufman's Modern Revisions (1999)
IM Larry Kaufman analysed hundreds of thousands of master games in 1999 and published refined piece values based on statistical win rates. His numbers are slightly different from the classical ones, and they've been used by top chess engines ever since:

Bishop vs Knight — Which Is Better?
The classical system rates them equal at 3, but they have completely different strengths:
Bishop is better when:
- The position is open (pawns traded off)
- Pawns are on both sides of the board
- You have the bishop pair
- You're attacking on long diagonals
Knight is better when:
- The position is closed (locked pawn chains)
- Pawns are on one side of the board
- There's a strong outpost square the knight can occupy
- You're attacking around a fixed pawn structure
Capablanca and Karpov were legendary for converting bishop pair advantages in apparently quiet positions. Nimzowitsch and Petrosian were equally legendary for placing knights on unassailable outposts in closed positions. The point is: don't just count points — count the kind of position you're in.
When to Trade — Common Exchanges

Trading a knight for 3 pawns

When the Point Count Is Wrong
The 1-3-3-5-9 system is a guideline, not a law. There are real positions where the “losing side” on points is actually winning. Watch for these:
- Forced mate trumps everything. A queen sacrifice that leads to mate in 3 is worth doing even though you give up 9 points. Calculation beats counting.
- Passed pawns gain value as they advance. A pawn one move away from queening is worth ~7 points — it's about to become a queen. Far-advanced connected passed pawns can be worth more than a minor piece.
- Piece activity overrides material. A trapped or boxed-in piece is worth a fraction of its nominal value. A bishop blocked by your own pawns can be worth less than 1 point. An active rook on the 7th rank can be worth more than 5.
- King safety changes the math. If your opponent's king is exposed, you can often sacrifice a rook or queen for an attack that wins back more than you gave. The classical Greek Gift sacrifice (Bxh7+) gives up 3 points for a mating attack.
- Endgames change relative values. In an opposite-coloured bishop endgame, being down a pawn is often a draw. In a queen endgame, even small material advantages tend to win. The same material count has different meaning in different positions.
How to Count Material Quickly

- Ignore all equal trades. If both sides have a queen, one rook, and both bishops — cancel them out mentally.
- Focus only on the imbalance. If you have an extra knight and your opponent has an extra pawn, the math is simple: 3 − 1 = 2 points up.
