Every Piece That Can Fork

Knight fork — the king of forks
The knight is the most dangerous forking piece in chess for one structural reason: its L-shaped jump attacks squares of the opposite colour to the one it stands on, and it cannot be blocked by intervening pieces. A knight on a light square attacks eight dark squares (or fewer at the rim); a knight on c7 forks a king on e8 and a queen on a8 simultaneously, and there is no in-between piece you can throw in the way. Pawn fork — the cheapest fork in chess
A single pawn pushed one square forward attacks both diagonals in front of it — the geometry guarantees that any pawn push potentially forks two pieces. The classical example is the e5/d5 / e4/d4 pawn break: White plays e5, attacking a knight on f6 AND a bishop on d6 at the same time. Pawn forks are the cheapest tactic in chess (a pawn is worth one point; the pieces it forks are worth three or more), so they're the highest-margin trick available. Bishop fork — the diagonal double attack
Bishops fork by attacking two pieces on the same diagonal or on two different diagonals through the bishop's square. The most common bishop-fork is the long-diagonal sweep — a bishop on g2 attacking both the rook on a8 and the knight on c6 along the h1–a8 diagonal. The second pattern is the discovered-bishop double: a bishop unmasks another piece's attack while creating its own fork. Bishop forks are slightly less common than knight or pawn forks because bishops are blockable — any pawn or piece on an intervening square breaks the attack. The flip side: bishops fork at long range, often from across the board, so they're hard to see coming.
Rook fork — the back-rank specialist
Rooks fork along files and ranks. The most common rook-fork is the 7th-rank double — a rook on the 7th attacking two undefended pieces or pawns on a8, b7, c7, etc. Another classic: a rook lift to the third rank that forks a knight on f3 and a bishop on h3. Rook forks are powerful because rooks are worth five points — the fork-win usually means trading the rook for two minor pieces or pieces + a key pawn, which is still a positive material swing. The famous 'pig on the seventh' (rooks doubled on the 7th rank) is mostly about creating endless rook-fork threats against the defender's loose pieces.
Queen fork — the eight-direction terror
The queen is the worst piece to commit to a fork (because if she's lost, you've given up nine points), but she's also the most flexible forker — eight directions, unlimited range, attacking files, ranks, AND diagonals at once. Queen forks usually combine a check with a material grab: Qh5+ forks the king on e8 and the loose bishop on b5, or Qd4 forks the king and the c4 knight from the centre. Because the queen has so much firepower, queen forks are often LAST in a combination sequence — the king has been driven into the open, the defender's pieces are scattered, and the queen arrives to scoop two of them in a single move.
King fork — yes, the king can fork too
Few players notice this, but in the endgame the king actively forks undefended pieces and pawns. A king on f6 attacks both g7 and e7; a king on d5 attacks four pawns on c4, c5, c6 (the king can capture forward), d6, and e4/e5/e6. King forks decide most pawn endings — the king-versus-two-passed-pawns problem is usually a king-fork race. The king cannot fork the opposing king (kings cannot stand on adjacent squares), but it can absolutely fork queens, rooks, knights, bishops, and pawns. If you're not using your king as an attacker in the endgame, you're missing roughly 15 % of the available tactical material.
Royal Forks, Family Forks, and Absolute vs Relative
Chess literature distinguishes four major fork categories. The vocabulary matters because each type has a different forcing guarantee:
Royal fork (king + queen)
The most famous fork in chess: a single piece — usually a knight — attacks the enemy king AND queen at the same time. Because check forces a king move (you cannot capture into check with a defended piece), the queen is lost. The textbook royal fork is Nxd5 forking the king on e8 and queen on f6, or the back-rank Nc7+ forking king on a8 and queen on e8. Family fork (king + queen + rook+)
The royal fork's bigger cousin: a knight check that forks the king, queen, AND a third piece (often a rook). The defender is forced to move the king (check first), losing both the queen and a rook in two moves. Absolute fork vs relative fork
An absolute fork involves a check — the king MUST move, so the second forked piece WILL be lost. A relative fork attacks two pieces neither of which is the king — the defender chooses which to save. Absolute forks (any check that also attacks a second piece) win the second piece by force. Relative forks win the higher-valued of the two forked pieces, but the defender can sometimes find a counter-fork, an in-between move (zwischenzug), or a defensive resource that saves both. When evaluating a fork, always check whether it's absolute (forced win) or relative (best-case win).
Double attack — the fork's strategic cousin
A fork is a single piece attacking two targets. A double attack is the broader category — any move that creates TWO threats at once, whether by one piece (fork), by two pieces (a discovered attack), or by combining a threat with another threat elsewhere on the board (zwischenzug, X-ray, deflection). Every fork is a double attack, but not every double attack is a fork. The strategic principle: defenders can usually meet one threat per move; the attacker who creates two threats per move wins material.
The Four Knight-Fork Patterns
Roughly 80 % of all knight forks in tournament games fall into one of four named patterns. Pattern recognition for these four shapes is the single highest-ROI tactical study at the 800–1800 level:
CCTV (centre-controlling-two-vital)
A knight in the centre on d5 or e5 attacks every square in its L-radius — typically including a back-rank rook, the queen, a king, and an undefended bishop simultaneously. The 'C-C-T-V' mnemonic stands for centre-controlling-two-vital — drop your knight in the centre, count the attacked targets, and look for the fork. Cybertruck-shaped fork patterns dominate IM and GM combinations: Ne5 forking Qc6 and Nf7 against an under-developed enemy structure.
Fishhook (rim square knight check)
Knights on the rim are usually weak — but the rim knight is a fork specialist. The pattern: knight on a-file or h-file, checking the king while simultaneously attacking a piece on the opposite side of the board. The classical fishhook is Nh4+ forking the king on g6 and the rook on f3. Or Na5+ forking king on b8 and the bishop on c4. Rim-knight forks are easy to miss because everyone is taught 'knights on the rim are dim' — but for one move, the rim is the strongest square on the board.
Double attack from the rim
Specifically the rare pattern where a knight on a rim square (h-file or a-file) attacks two non-king pieces. Example: Nh6 forks the queen on g8 and the rook on f7 — the knight doesn't check, but the queen MUST move (her loss = 9 pts vs giving up the rook = 5 pts), so the rook is lost regardless. Smothered fork (the prelude to smothered mate)
A knight forks the king and a major piece while the king is completely surrounded by its own pieces, making it impossible for the king to move and impossible for any defender to capture the knight. Scan every check on every move
60 % of fork tactics start with a check. Before you commit to your candidate move, run through every legal check you have — even checks that look obviously bad. If any check also attacks a second piece, you've found a fork. This is the single highest-value habit in tactical chess: 'checks first, captures second, threats third'. Most missed forks come from skipping the check-scan entirely.
Look for undefended pieces
Loose pieces drop off (LPDO — Nunn's rule). Before calculating combinations, list every undefended piece on both sides — rooks on the back rank, bishops that just moved, the queen on an unprotected square. Any move that attacks an undefended piece while creating a second threat is a potential fork. Most beginner fork tactics are LPDO + check = win the loose piece.
Watch the knight squares
The eight squares c7, e7, f7, d5 for White and c2, e2, f2, d4 for Black are statistical hotspots — most knight forks land there. If you have a knight within two moves of any of these squares AND the defender has heavy pieces on the back rank or in the centre, work backwards from the fork to find the move-sequence that places the knight on the forking square with tempo.
Pawn breaks always check for forks
Every pawn push attacks two squares. Before pushing e5, d5, f5, or c5 — count what's on the two diagonal squares. If you see a knight on f6 AND a bishop on d6 (or any two pieces on the diagonals), the push e5 wins the higher-valued piece. Pawn forks are the most common fork at amateur level, and they're hidden in plain sight in every opening.
How to Defend Against a Fork

Don't put your queen and king on the same colour
The single best anti-fork hygiene: keep your king and queen on opposite-coloured squares. A knight can only fork pieces on opposite-coloured squares to the one it stands on. If your king is on g8 (dark) and queen is on d8 (dark), no knight fork is possible between them. If they're on g8 (dark) + d7 (light), a knight on f6 forks both. Castling-then-queen-development planning should always check this.
Defend or move loose pieces immediately
An undefended piece is a fork waiting to happen. The general rule: every minor piece should be defended at least once by move 12. If a knight or bishop sits on an undefended square with the queen also undefended elsewhere, you are one knight-fork away from losing material. The fix: develop with defence in mind, or move the loose piece to a defended square the next chance you get.
Look for the fork BEFORE you move
Before each of your moves, ask: 'Does my opponent have a knight or piece move that creates a check + second attack?' Most fork losses come from playing a desired move that walks INTO a fork — a queen move to a fresh square that turns out to be on a knight-fork diagonal with the king. The fix: do an opponent-side fork-scan before every committal move.
Use zwischenzug to break absolute forks
When the opponent's fork is unavoidable, look for an in-between move (zwischenzug) — a stronger threat your opponent must meet before completing the fork sequence. The classic save: opponent plays Nxe7+ winning the queen on c6; you play …Bxh2+! first, forcing the king move, then losing the queen but with a piece + pawn back in exchange. Zwischenzug saves don't always work, but they're the only counter to an otherwise lost fork position.

Missing the knight fork because you scanned files and diagonals only
Knights move in an L-shape that doesn't follow files, ranks, or diagonals — and beginners trained on rook/bishop tactics literally skip knight scans. The fix: every move, run the explicit knight-fork check from your knights AND from your opponent's knights. Imagine the L-jump from each knight to every square in range. The eight target squares (c7, e7, f7, d5 / c2, e2, f2, d4) should trigger an automatic 'is there a fork?' scan.
Walking into a pawn fork on move 5
The classical pawn-fork-in-the-opening trap: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5 Nxd5? 6.Nxf7! — and now the knight forks the queen on d8 and the rook on h8 (the Fried Liver attack). The fix: in any Italian / Bishop's Opening setup where your knight has been developed early to f6 or c6, check for e5 / d5 pawn breaks every move. If the pawn break attacks both knights or knight + bishop, you have to be ready to move one out of the fork range BEFORE the push happens.
Calculating a fork without checking if the second piece is defended
A fork only wins material if BOTH the forking piece can survive AND the second piece is undefended. Common error: 'I play Nxd6 attacking the queen and the rook!' — except the queen captures back on d6 because a pawn defends the square. The fix: a fork is only a tactic when the forking piece can be lost without compensation OR is itself defended after the capture. Always count attackers and defenders on the forking square before pulling the trigger.
Treating any double attack as a fork
A discovered attack (one piece moves out of the way to unmask another piece's attack) is a double attack but NOT a fork — the two threats come from two pieces, not one. Forks are specifically single-piece-attacks-two. The terminological distinction matters because forks have different defensive responses (move one of the two pieces) than discovered attacks (block the unmasked line, or capture the unmasked attacker, or move the moving piece BACK to block). Mixing them up costs tactical accuracy.
Not looking for forks in the endgame
Most players stop scanning for tactics once queens come off the board. But endgame forks (king-and-pawn forks, rook-on-the-7th forks, lone-knight forks against a king and last-pawn) decide more games than any other tactical theme at the 1500+ level. The fix: in every endgame position, treat the king as an attacking piece. Count its forking squares. A king on d5 in a pawn endgame can fork pawns on c4 + e4 + d6 simultaneously — that's the same material swing as a queen check in the middlegame.
