Time Management Tips

  • • If you know the opening, play the first 5–8 moves in under 30 seconds total
  • • Spend extra time only on moves where the evaluation could swing significantly
  • • Never use more than 20% of your remaining time on a single move
  • • With increment, you can “bank” time by playing obvious moves quickly
  • • Below 1 minute remaining, make moves within the increment time to avoid flagging

How to Manage Your Chess Clock

Time management is one of the most overlooked skills in chess. Many players rated 800–1800 either spend too long in the opening (thinking about moves they should know) or rush critical middlegame decisions because they’re running low on time.

The general rule is: spend your time where it matters most. Opening moves should be played quickly if you know your repertoire. Middlegame positions with multiple candidate moves deserve the most thought. And always keep enough time for the endgame — converting a winning position under time pressure is how most games are thrown away.

The 20% Rule

Never spend more than 20% of your remaining time on a single move. If you have 5 minutes left, that means a maximum of 1 minute per move. If you have 1 minute left, spend no more than 12 seconds. This prevents the common mistake of thinking for 3 minutes on one move and then having to blitz the rest of the game.
