What Is a Battery?

A battery is a coordinated arrangement of two or more friendly pieces of the same movement type stacked on a shared file, rank, or diagonal. The pieces' power adds up along that single line — a rook + queen on an open file hits twice as hard as either piece alone, three heavy pieces tripled on a file (Alekhine's Gun) hit three times as hard, and a queen + bishop on a long diagonal creates the classic mating pressure that finishes more games between 1400 and 2200 than any other tactical pattern.

The word battery is borrowed from artillery — two or more cannons aimed at the same target, firing in coordination for maximum destructive effect. Chess batteries work the same way: the pieces aim at a named target square (usually a weak square in front of the enemy king, an infiltration square on the seventh rank, or a mating square on the back rank), and the firing move is either a direct capture, a sacrifice to open the line, or a discovered attack. Every battery has a target and a firing plan; without them, two pieces on the same line is just piece congestion, not a battery.

Batteries connect to every other tactical motif. Every discovered attack is a battery being fired; every double check is a battery firing both pieces simultaneously; every famous sacrifice on h7 or f7 or g7 is a battery firing a sacrificial front piece to open the line for the back piece. The Four Rules That Define a Battery

Every battery obeys the same four structural rules. Learn these once and every battery on every board becomes instantly recognisable:

Rule 1 — Two or more pieces share a line

A battery requires at least two friendly pieces stacked on the same file (heavy pieces only — rooks and queens), the same rank (heavy pieces only), or the same diagonal (queen and bishops only). One piece alone is never a battery; three pieces on the same line is a tripled battery — a promoted-heavy-piece specialty most famously realised by Alekhine's Gun (queen behind two rooks). Knights, kings, and pawns cannot participate in a battery because their movement rules do not add up along a shared line.

Rule 2 — The pieces must share the SAME movement type

Rook + queen combine because both slide along files and ranks. Bishop + queen combine because both slide along diagonals. Rook + rook combine (doubled rooks). Bishop + bishop CANNOT combine on the same diagonal because bishops of one colour only travel on that one colour, and a single diagonal only has room for one bishop; instead 'two bishops on adjacent long diagonals' (Boden's mate setup) is called a bishop pair, not a battery. Knight + anything is never a battery — knights don't share a line with any slider.

Rule 3 — The battery FIRES down the shared line

A battery is created for a purpose: to attack a target on the shared line. That target is usually a weak square in front of the enemy king (h7 for a kingside Greek Gift battery, the seventh rank for a doubled-rook battery, c8 for a Boden-style attack), an escape square, or a defender that must be dislodged. The pieces coordinate — the front piece can sacrifice or trade with support from behind, or the front piece can move away to unleash a discovered attack from the back piece. Every battery has a target and a firing plan; without them it's just two pieces on the same file with no purpose.

Rule 4 — The back piece is the 'battery support'

The piece behind is the powerhouse. It defends the front piece so the front piece can invade without being lost, it protects the invading square if the front piece captures, and it fires directly at the target after the front piece moves off (the discovered-attack pattern). In an Alekhine's Gun the queen behind two rooks is the 'end-of-line' powerhouse — the rook in front can sacrifice on the target square, the second rook recaptures, and the queen finally lands on the invading square with two friendly pieces behind her for support. The order matters: heaviest piece typically goes last so it inherits the invaded square.

The Six Classic Battery Patterns

Six patterns cover roughly 95 % of all practical batteries at club level. Learn to name them and every battery on every board becomes a known pattern:

Queen + rook (or rook + queen) on the open file

The most common battery in every 1.e4 / 1.d4 middlegame. After the e- or d-file opens through a central pawn exchange, one side doubles a rook and queen on the file aiming at the enemy back rank or a weak square in front of the king. Which piece goes in front depends on the target: queen-front-rook-back for a queen infiltration (Qd7! with Rd1 support), rook-front-queen-back for a rook infiltration (Rd7! with Qd1 support). The Alekhine's Gun tripling — rook + rook + queen in that order, queen at the back — is the most powerful realisation, invented and popularised by Alexander Alekhine in his 1930 game vs Nimzowitsch at San Remo (Alekhine's Qc7! after tripling on the c-file paralysed Nimzowitsch's position and won without a piece exchange).

Queen + bishop (or bishop + queen) on the diagonal

The mating battery. Two variants: (a) bishop in front + queen behind aiming at h7 or h2 for a Greek Gift or h7# mate — the archetypal Bxh7+ sacrifice needs the queen on the b1–h7 or a2–g8 diagonal ready to follow; (b) queen in front + bishop behind is rarer because the queen usually wants the invaded square. The classic long-diagonal battery Q + B on a1–h8 aims at the g7 or h8 square for a fianchettoed king; combined with a knight sacrifice on g7 or h6 this is the standard 'sacrifice on the fianchetto' recipe. Every attacking manual (Vukovic 1963, Weteschnik 2012) devotes at least one chapter to Q + B batteries because they finish more games between 1400 and 2200 than any other tactical pattern.

Alekhine's Gun — R + R + Q tripled on the file

The maximum-heavy-piece battery: rook + rook + queen stacked on a single open file, queen at the very back. Named for Alekhine's 1930 game against Nimzowitsch at San Remo where the tripling on the c-file (Rc1, Rc2, Qc1) forced Nimzowitsch into complete passivity — every attempt to break the pin lost material. The pattern is worth memorising even if you never play it: it teaches the concept of MAXIMUM piece coordination on a single line, and it remains the strongest configuration a heavy-piece endgame can reach. When you see three of your heavy pieces available and one open file, ask 'can I fire the gun?' — the answer wins games from 1300 to 2600.

Doubled rooks on the seventh rank

The second-most-decisive battery in chess. When two rooks reach the seventh rank (or the second rank for Black) with the enemy king trapped on the back rank, the pair is worth more than a queen in most positions — Capablanca called them 'pigs on the seventh' because they gobble up every unprotected pawn while the king cannot flee. The prerequisite is TWO open files leading to the seventh rank, or one open file plus a strong outpost square; the payoff is either a mating net on the eighth rank or the systematic capture of the enemy pawn shield. Fischer's 1972 Game 6 against Spassky finished with exactly this battery — Fischer's twin rooks on the seventh rank forced resignation without needing a single tactical shot.

Discovered-check battery

The tactical battery. A friendly bishop, knight, or pawn stands between a rook (or queen) and the enemy king on the same file, rank, or diagonal. When the front piece moves off, the back piece delivers check — and the moved front piece is free to attack whatever it likes with impunity, because the defender MUST answer the check first. Réti's 1918 mate against Tartakower is built on a discovered-check battery — the rook on d1 was 'the gun', the bishop on g5 was 'the trigger'; when the queen sacrificed on d8 and drew the king onto the d-file, Bg5+ fired the gun with double check (see our double-check hub for the full mechanics). Every discovered attack is a battery being fired; every battery is a potential discovered attack.

Double-check battery

The nuclear battery. A friendly piece (usually a bishop or knight) stands between a rook or queen and the enemy king, AND when the front piece moves off it ALSO delivers check on its new square. Both attackers fire simultaneously — the moved piece checks directly, the piece behind checks along the newly-opened line. Blocking is impossible (one blocker cannot stand on two lines); capturing is (almost always) impossible (one capture removes only one checker). Boden's mate 1853, Philidor's Legacy 1749, and every Anderssen-Immortal-style final blow is built on a double-check battery. This is the deadliest configuration in the entire tactical canon.

Seven Famous Batteries from Chess History

The battery has decided textbook combinations, world championship games, and the most-quoted brilliancy of every generation from 1858 to 1999:

Alekhine vs Nimzowitsch — San Remo 1930 (birth of Alekhine's Gun)

The game that gave chess the phrase 'Alekhine's Gun'. Alekhine tripled a rook + rook + queen on the c-file against Nimzowitsch's Caro-Kann, with the queen at the back defending both rooks. Nimzowitsch had no way to challenge the file — every rook trade left the second rook and queen still pointed at c7, every pawn advance lost material to the tripled attackers. Alekhine won without a single sacrifice; the pure weight of tripled heavy pieces on one file forced resignation. The pattern has been reproduced hundreds of times in tournament practice, but the naming honours Alekhine's original San Remo demonstration.

Capablanca vs Tartakower — New York 1924 (pigs on the seventh)

Capablanca's textbook example of doubled rooks on the seventh rank. After a queenside pawn break opened both the c- and d-files, Capablanca planted a rook on d7 and a second on c7, gobbling every pawn on the seventh rank one by one. Tartakower's king was trapped on the back rank; his queen was tied down to preventing back-rank mate; his pieces could not challenge the seventh rank without abandoning the king's defence. Capablanca coined the phrase 'pigs on the seventh' in his post-game annotations — the doubled-rook battery has been called that in every chess language since.

Fischer vs Spassky — Reykjavik 1972 Game 6 (Q + B battery)

Fischer's celebrated Queen's Gambit game against Spassky ended with a Q + B battery on the a2–g8 diagonal that Spassky could not neutralise. Fischer's bishop on the long diagonal aimed straight at Spassky's king; his queen behind the bishop supported the invasion. Every attempt to trade the bishop cost Spassky a pawn or an exchange. The game is played in every attacking-chess textbook as example #1 of long-diagonal battery pressure — Spassky reportedly stood and applauded Fischer's play at move 41, a gesture rarely seen at world-championship level.

Nezhmetdinov vs Chernikov — Rostov-on-Don 1962 (Q + B on h7)

Rashid Nezhmetdinov's 12.Qxh8+!! sacrificed the queen to open the h-file for a rook + bishop battery aimed at Chernikov's king. The battery — bishop on d3 with queen behind on the b1–h7 diagonal — had been building for 10 moves before the queen sacrifice detonated it. After Kxh8, Nezhmetdinov's Bxh7+!! double check (bishop + rook firing behind) forced the king into a mating net that finished 8 moves later. Réti vs Tartakower — Vienna 1918 (discovered-check battery)

Every discovered-check textbook begins with this game. Réti's rook on d1 was the battery's 'gun'; his bishop on g5 was the 'trigger'. When Réti's 9.Qd8+!! queen sacrifice forced Kxd8, Bg5+ fired the battery as a double check (bishop AND rook firing simultaneously). The king could not block (double check), could not capture, and had only one flight square — Kc7 — where 11.Bd8# closed the mating net. The whole combination is a six-move demonstration of how a discovered-check battery is set up (moves 1–8), triggered (move 9), and fired (move 10) for forced mate.

Kasparov vs Topalov — Wijk aan Zee 1999 ('immortal battery')

Kasparov's 24.Rxd4!! sacrificed a rook to open a queen + bishop + knight battery aimed at Topalov's king that had wandered to a1 across the board. The battery was built over ten moves: Kasparov's queen on the a2–g8 diagonal, bishop supporting from behind, knight ready to fire discovered checks. The eventual sequence Nxb2+ / Ra4+ / Qc1+ / Qb2# is a masterpiece of multi-piece battery firing that critics call 'the greatest attacking game of the modern era'. Every step is a battery move: firing, reloading, re-aiming. Kasparov himself called it his single best attacking game.

Morphy vs Duke of Brunswick — Paris 1858 ('Opera Game')

The most-taught game in chess history. Morphy's Rxd7! Rxd7 Rd1 built a doubled-rook battery on the d-file that fired straight at the enemy king. His concluding Qb8+!! Nxb8 Rd8# used the doubled-rook battery as a mating net — after the sacrifice, both rooks were the last remaining attackers on the d-file, and the recapture closed the box. Every chess teacher shows the Opera Game before showing any other complete master game, and every explanation emphasises that the middlegame was won by a battery — two rooks pointing at the target square d8, not by any single dramatic sacrifice.

How to Build a Battery — Four Steps

Every battery is built in the same four steps regardless of piece configuration or target. Follow all four and the battery converts to pressure or a tactical shot; skip any step and it collapses:

Step 1 — Identify the target

Before you build a battery, know what it will fire at. Common targets: h7 or h2 (Greek Gift + Q + B mate), the seventh rank (doubled-rook infiltration), the back rank (mate square), a fianchettoed g7 or b7 square (long-diagonal battery). Without a target, the battery is just piece congestion. Ask 'what am I aiming at?' before you play the first stacking move — if you can't name the target square, don't build the battery.

Step 2 — Open the shared line

Files open by pawn exchange, ranks by advancing the pawn chain, diagonals by clearing a bishop's home square. Before stacking pieces on a line, make sure that line is open (no friendly pawns in the way) OR that you have a concrete plan to open it in 2–3 moves. Alekhine tripled the c-file only after the c-pawns had been exchanged; Capablanca doubled the seventh rank only after opening two files leading to it.

Step 3 — Stack in the right order

Heaviest piece goes at the BACK. In a queen + rook battery, rook in front + queen behind is the standard because the queen protects the invading rook. If the queen is in front, the enemy trades pieces off — every trade is at least equal for the defender and costs the attacker a battery member. Alekhine's Gun tripling puts the queen at the very back for maximum protection: R + R + Q on the file, queen protected by both rooks in front of her. Get this wrong and the battery collapses to the first trade.

Step 4 — Fire

Once the battery is aimed and stacked, the FIRING move is either (a) a direct capture on the target square, (b) a sacrifice on the target square to open the line for the piece behind, or (c) a discovered attack where the front piece moves off to let the back piece hit an unrelated target. The firing move is the tactical climax; everything before it is preparation. Batteries that never fire — because you couldn't force the target open, or the enemy defended in time — are wasted tempi. Always have a concrete firing plan before building.

How to Defend Against a Battery — Four Answers

When your opponent points a battery at your king or a weakness, four defensive tactics disarm it. Combine two or three and even the strongest battery loses its firing plan:

Trade off the front piece

The simplest defensive answer: trade the front battery member for a defender or a piece of equal value. If the attacker's front piece is a rook and you have a rook available, offer a trade — after the exchange, the battery reduces from R + Q to just Q, which is much weaker. The queen alone on the file cannot invade without being defended. Every strong player watches for battery-front-piece trades — offering one is often the entire defensive plan.

Block the shared line

Insert a defended minor piece (knight preferred, because knights can't be traded off the file easily) between the battery and the target square. A blocked file has no firing plan; the battery becomes decorative. Blockade the file with a knight on the outpost square (c4, d5, e5, f5 for a central-file battery) and the battery loses its sting. Capablanca's endgame technique against battery attacks always started with a blocking knight — his 1927 world-championship games against Alekhine include four examples.

Push the target off the line

If the battery is aiming at your king or a piece, move the target. Castle to the other side, reposition the queen, evacuate the seventh-rank pawns. When the target is gone, the battery has nothing to fire at. This is the most common defensive answer to a Q + B battery on the b1–h7 diagonal: castle queenside and the h7 square is no longer a mating target. Every game of the Yugoslav Attack against the Sicilian Dragon revolves around whether Black can evacuate the g8-king before White's Q + B battery fires.

Counter-battery on a different line

The most aggressive defence. If your opponent points a battery at your king, point one back at his king on a different line. When both sides have batteries aimed at each other, the SIDE THAT FIRES FIRST usually wins. This creates a race: whoever finishes stacking first plays the sacrifice. Kasparov famously said 'the best defence against a battery is a bigger battery' — his games against Karpov in the 1985–1990 world championship matches feature at least a dozen counter-battery examples, each one deciding the game within 3–4 moves of the first firing shot.

The same five battery errors appear at every rating level below 1800. The fixes are mechanical — learn them once and every battery you build in your next twenty games converts:

Building a battery with no target

Stacking two rooks on the c-file when nothing on the c-file matters is just piece congestion — you have committed two heavy pieces to a line with no purpose, and your opponent will use the tempo to develop or attack elsewhere. Every battery needs a NAMED target square (h7, seventh rank, c8) BEFORE the first stacking move. If you can't say 'this battery fires at [square]', don't build it. This is the #1 club-level battery mistake — pattern-recognition without purpose.

Wrong stacking order — heavy piece in front

Queen-in-front-of-rook loses to the first trade offer — the opponent gives up a rook for your queen and the battery collapses. Heavy piece at the BACK, light front piece that can be sacrificed or traded without breaking the setup. Alekhine's Gun is R + R + Q for exactly this reason: two rooks in front, queen protected at the back. Get this wrong once and every battery you build in your next twenty games will collapse to a piece trade.

Firing prematurely without support

A common trap: you see a possible Bxh7+ sacrifice and fire the battery before the queen has arrived on the b1–h7 diagonal to support it. Without the queen's follow-up, Bxh7+ Kxh7 just loses a bishop. Every Greek Gift sacrifice requires the queen ALREADY on the supporting diagonal before the bishop lands on h7 — usually via Qc2, Qd3, or Qb1. Check the support piece is in place BEFORE you sacrifice the front piece.

Ignoring the enemy's counter-battery

You build a Q + R battery on the d-file aimed at d7, and while you're stacking, your opponent builds an R + Q battery on the a-file aimed at your king on a1 (kingside-castled variant). Whoever fires first wins — and while you were focused on your own line, you missed the enemy's parallel setup. Every third move during a battery-building phase should be spent scanning the ENEMY's heavy pieces: are they stacking too? If so, you're in a race, and the faster battery wins.

Confusing a battery with a pin

A battery is TWO friendly pieces coordinating on the same line; a pin is ONE enemy piece stuck against another enemy piece behind it. The two are related — a battery can create a pin (bishop-pin against a knight in front of the queen, with a queen behind supporting the bishop = pin battery), but they're structurally different. A pin can exist without a battery (any bishop pinning any knight); a battery can exist without any enemy piece involved (Alekhine's Gun with no target on the file yet). Can pawns be part of a battery?
