R+P vs RRook Endgame
The Philidor Position
Key Concept
Third-rank defense
How to Play This Endgame
The Philidor defense is the key drawing technique in rook and pawn vs rook. The defender places the rook on the 3rd rank (from the defender's perspective), cutting off the enemy king. Once the pawn advances to the 6th rank, the rook goes to the back rank to deliver checks from behind. This passive-then-active defensive switch is elegant and essential to learn.
