R+PP vs R+PPRook Endgame

Rook Endgames: Piece Activity

Key Concept

Active rook beats passive rook

How to Play This Endgame

In rook endgames with equal material, the activity of the rook is often more important than the pawn structure. Tarrasch's rule says rooks belong behind passed pawns — whether your own or your opponent's. An active rook (cutting off the enemy king, attacking pawns from behind) can compensate for a pawn deficit. A passive rook defending a pawn often leads to a slow loss.

Practice Tips

  • Set up the R+PP vs R+PP position on a board and practice against a friend or engine.
  • Focus on the key concept: Active rook beats passive rook. Understanding the principle matters more than memorizing exact moves.
