R vs NMajor Piece Endgame

Rook vs Knight

Key Concept

Corner trap

How to Play This Endgame

Like rook vs bishop, this is generally drawn — but with an important exception. The knight can get trapped in a corner, and the rook can force checkmate in certain positions. The defender must keep the knight centralized and near the king. If the knight gets pushed to the edge, the position can become losing. This endgame tests defensive precision more than attacking skill.
