K+P vs K+PPawn Endgame
Pawn Endgames: Opposition
Key Concept
Direct & distant opposition
How to Play This Endgame
Opposition is the single most important concept in pawn endgames. Direct opposition means kings face each other with one square between them — the player NOT to move has the opposition. Distant opposition extends this to 3 or 5 squares apart. Mastering opposition lets you calculate whether a pawn endgame is won, lost, or drawn without analyzing every move.
